That's it all over for Windows XP. Microsoft is no longer being selling this to the big PC makers. Efforts to get the Microsoft to give the mainstream versions of the Operating System have failed.

The typical interval between the launch of a new version of Windows and the end-of-sale date for the previous version is 2 years. With the instability problems of Vista and the disruption caused by many of the upgrades, should Microsoft have continued to make Windows XP available for at least 2 years, rather than the 18 months for Windows XP after 18 months."

The June 30 cut-off date has been and gone, however it may still be possible to get hold of Windows XP for a few months more as stocks preloaded onto PC may still be available. Microsoft will still provide mainstream suport until 14 April 2009, and extended support for another 5 years to 8 April 2014.

With the finale of Windows XP is it time to take seriously Vista, or are we better now to think about the future Windows 7?
